JA recognizes local businesses for dedication to community
Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee recently recognized twelve local businesses for their contributions to the community. These companies received the prestigious Community Impact awards at a back-to-school luncheon held Aug. 21st. The Community Impact awards are presented in recognition of the number of JA classes taught by employee volunteers in the 2007-2008 academic term.
Caterpillar Financial Services took the top award for the most JA classes taught by employees, totaling 133 classes last year. Other award winners included Deloitte, Publix Super Markets, Ford Motor Credit, Bridgestone, State Farm Insurance, HCA, Square D, HBSC, Ingram Industries, Ernst & Young and Gaylord Entertainment. Participants and award recipients were treated to lunch in JA BizTown, where they heard presentations from JA President Trent Klingensmith, JA Volunteer of the Year Ami Harvey, and JA Corporate Liaison for Deloitte John Doerge. Doerge gave ideas for companies to recruit JA volunteers, while Harvey shared the passion she feels for JA, which led her to volunteer in 10 classes during 2007-2008.

JA honors Volunteer and Teacher of the Year
JA recognized its 2007-2008 Volunteer and Teacher of the Year during the pre-game festivities of a Nashville Sounds game on August 9th.Winners of the 2008 awards are Amanda McGaugh, Teacher of the Year, and Ami Harvey, Volunteer of the Year. McGaugh and Harvey were nominated out of 1,000 volunteers and teachers involved with JA throughout Middle Tennessee. These women were selected for the awards based on their involvement in JA, their commitment to the education of todays youth and their passion to carry out the mission of the organization. McGaugh, the Business Academy teacher at Ravenwood High School, has hosted JA programs, including JA Titan, Success Skills, Economics, and Global Business Ethics, in her high school classrooms for the past five years. Harvey, who represents Caterpillar Financial Services, has been contributing to JA in various ways. In 2007 alone, she volunteered in 10 classrooms. Since 2005, she has volunteered with almost 500 students and 16 different teachers in three grades. In addition, Harvey has participated in JA Job Shadow, served as captain of Bowl-A-Thon teams, and volunteered her assistance at the JA Golf Classic for the past two years.
JA appreciates all of the time and effort put forth by all of its volunteers and teachers. As Middle Tennessee prepares to go back to school, JA looks forward expectantly to another great year.
